If you’re an RN or CNA who wants to work at a family-centered and faith-based hospital, HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan has immediate openings for RNs and CNAs, especially Critical Care RNs.
“Our greatest need right now is Critical Care RNs for our ICU. We also have RN openings in our Emergency Room, Home Health & Hospice, and Women & Infant’s Services, and CNA positions in our Medical/Surgical area” said Sarah Wasmer, Manager, People Services, at HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital.
One draw for critical care nurses to St. Nick’s, as it is known in the community, is the new ICU and Intermediate Care Unit, which will open in January 2017. The new units bring the latest in patient care technology in a warm, welcoming setting to those who need the most critical care.
Support for new skills and higher degrees
RNs working at St. Nick’s need either a two-year associate’s degree or a four-year bachelor’s degree in Nursing. The hospital does require RNs with an associate’s degree to get their bachelor’s degree within five years of their hire.
St. Nick’s supports their nurses in furthering their education. “One of our benefits is our education assistance policy, where our colleagues can apply for financial assistance to help pay for their education,” she said. Full-time colleagues are eligible for up to $3,000 a year.
The hospital also needs CNAs. Many CNAs move quickly on to get their registered nurse degrees, seeing it as stepping stone rather than a destination for their career, Wasmer said, but added, “we still need CNAs.”
Family-centered and faith based
A lot of nurses apply for jobs St. Nick’s from the area, Wasmer said. They know its reputation for providing great care, and “they want to be part of that”.
However, its reputation and its state-of-the-art facilities attract talent from other parts of the country as well. James Gutierrez and his wife relocated from where they grew up in southern California to Sheboygan, and he took a job at St. Nick’s. “I chose St. Nick’s because of their Hyperbaric and Wound center, which is unique to Sheboygan and the only one in town or nearby,” he said.
St. Nick’s reputation is built on its caring environment and faith focus. “(Applicants) are attracted to the mission. Being a faith-based organization usually means a lot to the candidates applying here,” she said, adding, “That’s what sets us apart from other hospitals.”
Those who work at St. Nick’s also like that it is a family-centered environment. The whole person is important to the organization, not just the person who reports to work.
The hospital works to create a welcoming and supportive culture for colleagues, patients and their families. “When you walk through the hallways, people look you in the eyes and sense if you’re not sure where you going and will help you find your way,” she added.
Gutierrez says while the state-of-the facilities were a big draw that the caring people working at St. Nick’s have made a lasting impression on him because great people translate to exceptional care for its patients.
“Coming from a very big city and a very big hospital, I can say that you can spend millions of dollars in equipment and renovations but that doesn’t improve the patient experience as much as having the right people working there,” he said, adding: “St Nick’s has the most kind hearted and genuinely caring staff, in all departments, that I’ve ever heard of or seen and working here has changed my outlook on hospitals and people in general.”
Gutierrez and his wife have not only found a great place to work, but they have also found, in Sheboygan, a great place to call home.
“My wife and I chose Sheboygan because we both were born and raised in San Diego, and Sheboygan has both that feel of a coastal town plus a very good selection of food and outdoor activities,” he said.
While they still visit family and friends in southern California, they don’t miss the increasingly crowded conditions and increasingly dry climate, and they enjoy living in a place that has four seasons.
