The Planning & Conservation Department plays a number of lead roles throughout the County. Many comprehensive plans are maintained through the office, a number of ordinances are administered, the County's recreational facilities are managed, a number of notable programs are managed in the office.
Glacial Lakes Conservancy, Inc. is a private, nonprofit land conservation organization. The original founders saw that during the 1990′s, approximately 8,000 rural acres were subdivided for residential purposes in the unincorporated areas of Sheboygan County alone, prompting a deep concern for the future of our region’s lands and waters.
The Sustainable Living Group (SLG) educates the local community about the possible uses and the benefits of sustainable living practices, renewable energy, and energy efficiency. The SLG also promotes and networks with the area businesses that are promoting the idea of sustainability, renewable energy, conservation, and energy efficiency.
Earthfest has blossomed into an event attended by thousands, offering four stages to choose from, over 70 vendors, artists and nonprofit organizations to interact with, an amazing variety of local food and now runs for two days. Even with such tremendous growth, our original mission has not changed. Every year, we strive to give local businesses and no-profit organizations the spotlight. Speakers on a variety of environmental and sustainable topics share valuable information and insight.
Formed in 1957, a few conservation minded groups incorporated and formed the Sheboygan County Conservation Association. Now the group consists of 27 conservation clubs and is over 2200+ members strong. We all work together to educate, conserve and protect the environment.
The Sustainable Sheboygan Task Force (SSTF) was created by the Mayor of Sheboygan and the Sheboygan Common Council in August of 2008 to study and make recommendations regarding strategies to be adopted by the City for creating and maintaining a sustainable Sheboygan; focusing on such topics as recycling, green purchasing, energy conservation, waste management and sustainability measures, and raising community awareness on environmental stewardship, that will result in cost savings and reduced consumption of resources throughout the City.
