Kohler Co. is searching for 250 candidates to fill positions at their businesses near their Wisconsin headquarters and recently held a job fair in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, as part of their recruitment process. In addition to openings in their hospitality business, they also have a wide number of roles in their kitchen and bath, power and small engine businesses.
Many of these positions are in entry level manufacturing, and the openings include assembly material handling, machine set up, pottery support roles, faucets operators, finishing cells as well as enamelers in the foundry. Kohler is a great place for candidates who are looking to get their start or are looking for a change, said Justina Torres, a manufacturing recruiter with Kohler. Wages for these entry level manufacturing roles start at $32,000,
The pottery support roles involve moving sinks and other products from the kilns to the lines where they are sanded down, she said. A finishing cell operator buffs and polishes the faucets and fixtures. Assembly material handling includes roles moving everything from raw stock to product around the factory using tow motors or forklifts.
Megan Murray works as a material handler on the second shift at Kohler’s engine plant in Kohler Wisconsin, and she described her job and explained what she likes it. “I work in the receiving department unloading trailers, receiving and checking in materials and in the machine shop driving a forklift delivering and picking up parts. My favorite part of the job is the variety of tasks I get to tackle,” she said.
Successful applicants have ranged from workers with no experience, fresh out of high school, to others with some manufacturing experience who are looking for a new opportunity, Torres said.
The applicants with no experience are often just starting out their career and want to get straight into the workforce after school, while others are looking at positions that will allow them to earn enough money for the next stage in their education, she added.
A manufacturing job at Kohler offers an opportunity to make things that people use everyday, such as sinks bathtubs or engines for lawn mowers. Kohler employees take pride in craftsmanship, and for some, it’s a chance to make something truly beautiful.
Torres, who has a background in manufacturing, explained why she likes working at Kohler. “I love coming to work everyday. I worked in a factory. I love my job, and I love that I can put people into a job that I did,” she said.
And she’s not alone. “People tell us that why they want to be here is that they want to be a part of something,” she said.
Murray explained why she sees Kohler as a great place to work. “I’ve met some great people that really care about your well-being and want to see you succeed. If you work hard, are motivated, and show that you are an asset to the team, the opportunities are limitless. I like knowing I have a dependable job where I can use my skills and opportunity the company provides to further my career.”
Successful applicants demonstrate a desire to work that goes deeper than simply having a good work ethic, Torres says. Kohler is also looking for strong team skills, including good communication and good conflict resolution skills.
Murray displays that desire to work. “Nothing in life comes easy. To accomplish something you must work hard, go out there and work for it. Extreme dedication builds character and gives you the ability to be proud of yourself,” she said.
The first step is to fill out a general application, Torres says, before a phone screen, which might lead to onsite interviews.
If successful, applicants are placed in roles based on their prior work history.
New hires then have onsite orientation both for Kohler overall as well as their specific business unit.
After a 90-working day probation, new hires have a lot of opportunities to grow in the company, with the possibility of both promotion and transfer to other divisions. Employees who start in general manufacturing can get training and move up into skilled trades roles, for example.
